Intra-EU French soft wheat exports to hit 9 million mt
Frances soft wheat exports are set to crank up this season – particularly within the EU – as a healthy crop boosts the countrys export surplus, sending domestic stock levels to their lowest levels in four years, Franceagrimer said Wednesday
That"s up 130,000 mt from last month’s 8.94 million mt estimate, and significantly higher than the 6.26 million mt exported during in the last campaign after France"s crop suffered large losses as unfavourable weather broke at the end of the growing season. Damage to the Spanish crop, combined with a healthy French crop this season, is set to catalyse France’s intra-EU exports, while continued tough competition from major producers such as Russia makes for a fiercely competitive arena for France’s global exports. Nonetheless, Franceagrimer increased its export forecast for destinations beyond the EU during 2017/18, adding 100,000 mt to take it to 8.4 million mt. While that"s more than double the volume exported last year, it remains well below the 11-12 million mt highs that France regularly achieved before Russia started ramping up its wheat export program. With production unchanged at 36.56 million mt and exports revised upwards, Franceagrimer has cut end-stocks to 2.53 million mt, taking them to a four-year low. Similarly, for durum wheat, intra-EU exports were revised upwards by 200,000 mt to 1.2 million mt, while overseas exports were further cut to 330,000 mt. Total corn exports were also revised upwards by more than 3% to 5.46 million mt, with the majority staying within the EU. Although the increase did little for ending stocks, which were put at 2.70 million mt, staying at a three-year high.
