Prolonged Argentine dryness punishes 2020/21 wheat crop - exchange
BUENOS AIRES, Aug 6 (Reuters) - The drought that has hammered parts of Argentinas farm belt since June continued putting downward pressure on recently planted wheat crops over the last week, the Buenos Aires Grains Exchange said in its weekly report on Thursday
In the central farm belt "the back and forth between frosts and lack of rainfall has further stressed the development of wheat fields," the exchange said in the report. "How much is the harvest going to drop compared with the 21 million tonnes that we expected at the beginning of the season? That will depend on how long the scenario continues," the exchange"s lead analyst Esteban Copati told Reuters. Argentine farmers had sown 98.3% of the season"s expected wheat area as of Wednesday, according to the exchange. Wheat harvesting in Argentina starts in November and ends in January. The country"s 2019/20 corn harvest ended over the previous week, the report said, at an estimated 50 million tonnes.
